When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020 and everyone was forced to stay at home, eCommerce sales grew by over 30%. The pandemic caused consumers to adapt to shopping online, and because of that, the eCommerce sector benefited from tremendous growth.

However, even before the pandemic, many shoppers preferred to visit stores virtually because it’s faster and easier than going into a brick-and-mortar location.

That’s why now is the perfect time to explore eCommerce if you’re considering a change in your career. By 2022, eCommerce revenue in the U.S. is expected to reach $479 billion.

When you’re looking to change careers, it’s important to consider if you’ll actually be happy in your new job. We typically spend 40 hours or more working per week, so the job should be something you enjoy doing.

If you were to become an eCommerce Specialist, your job would be to create and implement strategies for online transactions as well as work on strategies for logistics (since this is directly connected to the success of your sales). In addition, you would also contribute to the marketing for the continued growth of the company.

How Do I Get a Job in eCommerce?

Let’s first look at how much education an eCommerce Specialist needs:

  • 66.1% have a bachelor’s degree
  • 5.9% have a master’s degree

However, even though many eCommerce Specialists have degrees, it’s possible to become one with a high school education or GED. 

If you want to continue your education through online courses to beef up your resume for an eCommerce Specialist role, focus on the following skills and subject matters:

  • eCommerce Industry
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO), especially eCommerce SEO
  • Communications (written, design, and video)
  • eCommerce platforms and technical tools, for example, WooCommerce, Shopify, BigCommerce, and Amazon
  • Pay-per-click (PPC) ads
  • Content, Email, and Social Media Marketing (or really any type of digital marketing)
  • Conversion Optimization
  • Website Training

Although we’ve mainly been talking about hard skills (quantifiable knowledge), soft skills are also essential for landing an eCommerce role. Soft skills do not apply to one specific job or line of work but are universal. 

Soft skills include interpersonal skills, creativity, adaptability, emotional intelligence, persuasion, and collaboration. Don’t hesitate to include soft skills on your resume! After all, when it comes to eCommerce especially, you often have to be quick on your feet and resolve issues for customers on the spot, so this is a crucial soft skill.

As far as job experience, many entry-level eCommerce Specialists require or benefit from previous roles such as:
